The one obvious analogy for the dynamics of the IPL is the free market economy: It keeps producing new winners and hence renewing itself
As the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) moves towards draw of stumps, there is a lesson to be learnt that goes beyond the nail-biting finishes, the eye-popping advertising deals, the skin show by cheerleaders and the musings of the fake IPL player.
The four teams that were in the running for the decidedly ugly trophy before Friday night were: Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Last year’s winners, Rajasthan Royals, were out of the reckoning. And two of the top four teams this year—Deccan and Royal Challengers—did miserably in IPL 2008.
Such a churn is cause for celebration because it is also a sign of dynamism. The one obvious analogy that comes to mind is the free market economy: It keeps producing new winners and hence renewing itself.
The same goes for sport. There was a time when Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy for 15 consecutive years. Such dominance is unthinkable now. This is a new world of competition.livemint.com
